Two milestones in Valdemar’s history and a legacy of winemaking excellence: Celebrating 5 years of innovation in Washington and 135 years of history in Rioja.
Valdemar Estates celebrates its 5th anniversary in 2024
In 2024, Valdemar Estates, the Valdemar Family winery in Washington, USA, celebrates its 5th anniversary. This milestone coincides with an even more significant event: 135 years of winemaking history of Bodegas Valdemar, one of the most prestigious and long-established wineries in Rioja.

Since its origins in 1889, Bodegas Valdemar has been synonymous with innovation and quality in the world of wine. Over five generations, the Valdemar family has maintained an unwavering commitment to sustainable viticulture, internationalisation and accessibility, setting new standards in the global wine industry.
A Legacy of Innovation and Commitment
The history of Bodegas Valdemar began in a small winery in Oyón, where the family stood out for its pioneering vision. They were the first to promote the Viura variety in Rioja and in 1989, they introduced the first barrel-fermented white wine in Spain. The tradition of innovation continued with the recovery of almost extinct native varieties, such as Maturana and Graciano, and the production of the first sparkling wine from Rioja’s Singular Vineyard.
In 2019, Valdemar Estates opened its doors in Walla Walla, marking a milestone as the first non-US winery in Washington State. This expansion reflects the pioneering spirit of the family and their vision of taking the essence of Rioja to new horizons. Valdemar Estates has been recognised for its focus on sustainability and accessibility, being the first winery in the United States with a 100% accessible and inclusive wine tourism experience.
Celebrating the Present and Looking to the Future
“Celebrating 135 years of history in Rioja and 5 in Washington is a testament to our continued commitment to excellence and innovation,” say Ana and Jesús Martínez Bujanda, 5th generation of the Valdemar family. “We are deeply proud of our heritage and excited about the future we are building in Washington and Rioja.”
“Five years ago, we embarked on an adventure that led us to open Valdemar Estates in Walla Walla, Washington. It was not just an expansion, but a manifestation of our pioneering spirit and our desire to take the essence of Rioja to new horizons. Since then, Valdemar Estates has flourished, becoming the first non-US winery in the state and setting new standards in sustainability and accessibility. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of our friends and customers.”
